Intellectual Rights

SUMMARY
A donation of intellectual rights includes the transfer of copyrights, patents, or other intangible property to the Foundation. You can receive a tax deduction for your generosity and possibly provide a source of income to the Foundation to make a lasting impact.

How It Works

  • You transfer a copyright, patent, or other intangible property to the Foundation.
  • Intellectual property gifts involve complex legal and tax issues. You and the Foundation will each consult your legal counsel throughout the gift process.
  • The Foundation may hold the property and derive income from the asset to further our mission.
  • The Foundation may sell the property at some point in the future and use the proceeds for our mission.

Benefits

  • You can receive an immediate income tax deduction for the appraised value of the gift and pay no capital gains tax. Some gifts of intellectual property may also allow you to take additional deductions in the future.
  • In some instances, you can use intellectual property to fund a life-income gift that provides your family with an income now while still benefiting the Foundation in the future.
  • You can make a gift that is immediately beneficial to the Foundation without having to give cash.
